“Experienced valley modelers formed the Mesa Model Yacht Club in October 1987. The Club was officially sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) in November 1987.
The Club was organized for the sport of radio controlled model yachting: operation and racing of model sailboats, steam and electric powered model boats and ships, exclusively. The primary purpose of the Club is to assist its members in the furtherance of the sport for the mutual pleasure, education and benefit of its members.” This excerpt taken from a document provided by one of the original founders, Russ Harwell.
Originally the Club held monthly business meetings as well as boating activities held at Dobson Ranch Park on Sunday mornings and regatta weekends from September 1st through July 31st each year.
Over the years schedules and activities have changed and now include only sailboats. Currently formal regattas are held once a month during the “winter season” from September through May. Informal racing events are typically held once a week, with the selected day subject to change.
